Howl y’all doin’? Happy Halloween! I hope everyone has a spook-tacular day. Trick or treat yourself to some candy.
If today is Halloween, it must mean tomorrow is the first day of NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month. It’s an event in which participants attempt to write a 50,000-word novel in the month of November. Hundreds of thousands of writers take part in this annual challenge. Participants have the chance to get help with their story, connect with other writers, attend write-ins, and win prizes if they write 50,000 words by the end of November. It really is a fun event.
I remember my first time doing NaNoWriMo. I had been sure I couldn’t write a whole novel in only a month. I mean my first novel took me several years to write, how was I going to write one in 30 days?! I surprised myself, though. I had written 52,488 words in November of 2015. It felt amazing. If you’re a writer and never participated in NaNoWriMo, I recommend trying it! Even if you don’t participate, the NaNoWriMo site has some great resources to help you get started with your novel.
I wanted to do the event this year. I wanted to start on my new manuscript Wheeling the Halls. However, I have a lot going on in my life right now. I recently enrolled in college. I’m waiting to hear back about my next steps in the registration process and whether or not I’ll even receive financial aid for the program I want to do. I have a 50/50 chance. I’m already a little stressed, I’m a little overwhelmed, and I’m a little worried. My mental health is more important than NaNoWriMo, so I’m going to sit this one out. Also, I need to focus on editing the manuscripts I already have instead of writing new ones. I’m going to work on editing my manuscript, Lucky Star, as much as I can when I can.
If you’re doing NaNoWriMo this year, I hope you kick butt! If I can do it, you definitely can do it. Only you can tell your story! I wish you all gourd luck and I can’t wait to read your stories someday. Let’s get this NaNo party startled, but don’t forget to carve out some time today for Halloween fun!
